The human brain, compared to the brains of other mammals, has a massively enlarged neocortex. The neocortex is composed of discrete elements, which neuroscientists refer to as “cortical columns”. The dramatic expansion of human neocortex only involved the addition of more cortical columns, but the structure of each individual column has remained the same in all mammalian brains. Therefore, from an evolutionary perspective, a cortical column must be very useful.
